Anime Series Like Okami-san and Her Seven Companions

Ookami and her best friend Ringo are part of the Otogi Bank, a club that assists students with problems in return for assistance later on. In order to ensure these loans, the Otogi Bank members go all out, but there members are all females. Knowing some problems require a male touch. Ookami seeks to recruit Morino Ryoushi, a boy with a fear of being looked at who just confessed to Ookami.

While there is some wasted potential here, there is still much to love in Okami-san and Her Seven Companions (like the Narrator). If you are looking for more anime recommendations, then head on down below.

For Fans of Comedy Evolving to Romance

Toradora

Ryuuji Takasu is a gentle student with a passion for housework, however his thug face causes his fellow students to think him a delinquent. Taiga Aisaka is small and cute, but with an attitude as fierce as a tiger. Both of these misunderstood students have a crush two classmates, and after a series of misunderstandings of their own, they find themselves in an unlikely alliance.

While Toradora leaves more breadcrumbs at the beginning to display it is more of a romance series, both of these start off with a lot of comedy. They introduce the characters and they don’t seem like much at first, but soon that comedy and those characters grow into something special and actually quite touching.

Angel Beats

One evening Otonashi wakes up in a strange place and a strange girl with a gun tells him he is dead. Trying to recruit him to her organization that rebels against God, Otonashi decides to talk to her enemy, a mysterious girl named Angel. After she kills him for being too literal, he finds himself siding with the SSS Battlefront and the oddballs within.

Vastly different in setting, yes, but what you will find here are two series that grow to be really quite emotional. In Okami-san, the comedy transforms into a more romantic tales with a touch of drama from trauma action. In Angel Beats, it undergoes a similar transformation, but with less emphasis on the romance and more on the trauma drama.

Ouran High School Host Club

In Ouran High School, the typical student is a member of the wealthy elite, but not Haruhi Fujioka. Accepted on a scholarship, Haruhi wants to avoid all the glitz and glamour in order to study hard and become a lawyer. While looking for a rare quiet place to do so, Haruhi stumbles upon a host club. Frantic to get away from these weird boys, Haruhi breaks a valuable vase. In order to pay back the debt, the club demands that Haruhi becomes a host. There is only one problem, contrary to what the boys believe, Haruhi is actually a girl.

If you know nothing about Ouran High School Host Club, you are in for a glorious surprise. If you enjoyed how Okami-san progressed, this series turns that dial to eleven. It starts off very comical, but by the end of the series it is still funny, but there is so much more emotion involved in it. Furthermore, you also learn in both series that the comedy serves as a nice little mask for some of the deeper issues.

For Fans of Helpful Clubs

SKET Dance

At Kaimei High School, there is a club dedicated to helping others. They call themselves the SKET Brigade, dedicates to Support, Kindness, Encouragement, and Troubleshooting. This club’s cast of quirky members takes the requests of others and tries to live by SKET, though often being intentionally hilarious in their efforts.

Both series are about clubs that help out other students. While Okami-san turns into a romance and there is less of a focus on the club near the end, SKET Dance keeps the focus. Furthermore, the comedy is top  tier throughout as well.

Medaka Box

As the perfect girl, it is only natural that Medaka Kurokami would win the election for school president by a landslide. Her first order of business is to install a “Medaka Box” in which the students could request her help. Medaka fulfills these requests with top speed, adding a flower to the student council room with each student helped. However, during her trials, she discovered a malicious plot on the academy and herself.

Both series center upon people that will do anything to help others that ask for it. Both start off as comedies, then change into something more. However, Medaka gets a bit more serious in its plot. However, throughout, you will find helpful people being helpful.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

Hachiman Hikigaya firmly believes that a joyful youth is something that people make up just to lie to themselves. After writing an essay criticizing relationships, he is forced to join the Volunteer Service Club that is aimed at helping others solve their problems. With the only other member being the icy Yukino Yukinoshita, they use their wits and cold views on society to help others.

In Okami-san, you watch a club help people with an unusual requests that they pay back that debt later. In SNAFU, you watch a club help people when it is formed of people whose personalities seem diametrically opposed to helping people. While they are light-hearted at first, there is a lot beneath the surface in both.

For Fans of Emotional Support

Mayo Chiki

After a odd encounter in the bathroom, he discovers that the most popular student at his school and butler to the headmaster’s daughter is actually a girl. In order to keep this secret, the girl says she will cure his phobia.

In both of these series, the male character doesn’t look like much at all. Furthermore, they have unique phobias. You expect the female to help them, and they do to an extent, but surprisingly, the male character is the one to support them by the end.

Arakawa Under The Bridge

Kou Ichinomiya, as the son of a wealthy businessman, has vowed never to become indebted to anyone. However, when he falls in the river under Arakawa Bridge, someone dives in to save him, thus he owes his life to this person. She is a homeless girl named Nino who wants only one thing – to fall in love. In order to pay her back, he accepts her offer to be her boyfriend, thus moving out of his home and starting a new life under the bridge.

Both series are tales of a boy that meets a girl. Together, they make some great comedy, especially with the quirky characters. However, you also get a special emotional connection in each series which ends up being kind of unexpected.

Class President is a Maid!

After their high school’s recent transfer from all-boys school to co-ed, it wasn’t easy for Misaki Ayuzawa to become the school’s first female class president. While she inspires terror at school, she also works part-time at a maid café to help her struggling family. However, when one of the most popular boys at school, Takumi Usui, discovers her secret, her world is about to get a whole lot more complicated.

While the male main in Class President is a Maid isn’t quite as weak, everyone has their damages. However, in both series, you watch the main couples grow and support each other emotionally. While Okami-san has more comedy, Class President is a Maid does have a few good laughs as a more standard rom-com.
