Anime Series Like Asteroid in Love

As a child, Mira met a boy named Ao at a campsite. While they were gazing at the sky, Mira learned there was a star with her name, but none with Ao’s name. She made a promise that one day they would explore asteroids and name a star after him. Years later, Mira is reunited with Ao at their school’s Earth Science Club. This is also when she discovers that Ao is actually a girl.

A nice soothing anime about exploring space and earth in an all-girls club. It is classic cute girls doing cute things, and if you want more anime recommendations similar to Asteroid in Love, head on down below.

For Fans of All-Female Casts

Non Non Biyori

Asahigaoka is rural village in the middle of nowhere, and for the five students who go to school there, their days are all about keeping the boredom at bay. All of different ages, their ways to entertain themselves never border on normal.

Both series want you to drink in the scenery of the show, and like to show it off. Furthermore, there is little plot and lots of cute interactions between the girls. However, Non Non Biyori has less focus on a specific thing and more is just random skits in a rural town.

K-On

Upon entering high school, Yui is immediately entranced by the Light Music Club. The problem is, she can’t play an instrument. Deciding to join the club anyway, the other club members, despite disappointment in her lack of musical knowledge, allow her to join to prevent the club’s disbandment. Today begins Yui’s musical education!

While K-On is much higher energy with an actual plot, it, too, follows an all-girl club that is dedicated to doing a particular thing. They spend much less time outside, but they have a lot of fun and look cute while doing it.

Laid-Back Camp

After moving, Nadeshiko decides to go see Mount Fuji. She manages to bike pretty far, but has to turn back because of the weather and ends up fainting. When she wakes up, she finds herself somewhere she has never been and no way to find her way back. It is in this wilderness where she is saved by Rin, a girl who was out camping by herself.

Asteroid in Love spends a lot of time outside with the girls exploring the earth and the sky with Laid-Back Camp doing the same thing. The girls go out and they camp and have fun, both with really very little plot beyond that. Both also have some very nice visual moments.

For Fans of Soothing Chill Anime

Barakamon

After losing his temper on a critic, renowned calligraphy artist Sieshuu Handa is exiled to the Goto Islands by his father for a period of self-reflection. There he seeks to find new inspiration for his art, but finds that his neighbors and some neighborhood kids keep getting in his way.

Both series aim to be more about comedy and living life than actual plot. There are some better jokes in Barakamon, but the fact that it has some older characters matures it up too.

The Flying Witch

15-year-old Makoto Kowata is a witch, but her skills in it leave something to be desired. To further train her craft, she moves to rural Aomori, Japan to live with her cousins. This area, rich in nature, is the perfect place to commune with nature and hone her craft.

Both series try their best to create a very soothing atmosphere. They also focus on things that are a bit beyond the characters. The Flying Witch focuses on trying to make magic seems possible in our world by making it nature-focused while Asteroid in Love focuses on exploring space from the ground since they can’t actually get there.

Encouragement of Climb

Aoi Yukimura has loved mountains since she was a kid, but a playground accident left her afraid of heights. Now a timid first year high school student, she is practically friendless until she reconnects with the lively Hinata. As an old friend from her climbing days, Hinata fosters a change in Aoi’s world that leads her back to the mountains she loves.

Both shows focus on an all-female club that is doing something they are passionate about. While mostly it is cute girls having fun, they both drop a few nuggets of actual information in there too.

For Fans of Space and Space Exploration

Astra Lost in Space

Each year, the students of Caird High School are placed in groups for Planet Camp. When group B5 land at their camp site, they are engulfed by a mysterious sphere of light that transports them into the middle of space, 5,000 light years away from home. After discovering an old space ship, they begin their very long journey home.

While Asteroid in Love keeps the children firmly grounded on earth, Astra allows a group of them to explore space in an intriguing little story. Astra is certainly the more intense and mysterious show, but it has its fun moments too.

Space Brothers

After spotting what they believe to be a UFO, two brothers Mutta and Hibito vow to become astronauts. Fast forward to their adult years and Mutta’s life isn’t going as expected as he toils in an automotive company while the younger Hibito is well on his way to be the very first Japanese man on the moon. When Mutta loses his job and is given a chance to catch up to his brother by joining the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, he jumps at the chance.

If you liked the space element in Asteroid in Love, but want to follow it up with something more serious, yet still realistic, this is an excellent option. Space Brothers is about actual astronauts and not just kids, grounded in reality and drama.

At the Mercy of the Sky

After seven years away, Saku is moving back to his hometown. There he meets his childhood friend Mihoshi. However, as they left things in a bad way, she is determined to improve his opinion of him by forcing him to join the Astronomy Club she founded.

Weirdly similar in plot, At the Mercy of the Sky is less of a chill anime about space and more of a romantic comedy. Essentially, this might have been the series if Ao was actually a boy.
