Runaways #1 (Preview)
Get Ready To Run! Marvel’s RUNAWAYS Brings The Team Back Together! Your 1st look at Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka’s new series! New York, NY—August 18, 2017— Nico, Karolina, Molly, Chase, Old Lace and even Gert are back – and better than ever! This fall, best-selling YA writer Rainbow Rowell (Carry On, Eleanor and Park), superstar artist Kris Anka (All-New X-Men, Star-Lord) and Eisner-winning colorist Matt Wilson (The Mighty Thor, Black Widow) team up to bring the universe’s pluckiest team of super heroes back to where they belong: in the pages of a Marvel comic book. “As a Runaways fan, it’s been such a thrill for me to see these characters together again,” said writer Rainbow Rowell. “I can’t wait to let everyone else into the party.” “For years I batted other editors and creators back from the Runaways,” said Executive Editor Nick Lowe. “I was the last Editor to edit them and they are precious to me, so I didn’t want just ANYBODY to bring them back. So when my new favorite writer (

Runaways #4
Noelle Stevenson and Sanford Greene wrap up the “Doomed Youth” story arc in “Runaways” #4. Of all the issues, this one feels the most rushed. A lot happens, though some of the plot twists would have been better-served with more lead time to build tension. However, the artwork makes up for some of the pacing, especially the superb facial expressions in the final showdown scene with Bucky and Valeria. At the beginning of the issue, Valeria still spouts propaganda for her father with her shark-like little girl grin. I like her combination of self-importance, cuteness and viciousness, but so little attention has been paid to her that the confrontation with her father’s soldiers isn’t as meaningful as it could have been. It’s not surprising that her right-hand man/babysitter Bucky is the catalyst for this change, but Bucky’s own decisions are a surprise, because the character has been a blank slate up until now. Based on the amount of characterization Valeria and Bucky have received up t

Runaways #2
“Runaways” by Noelle Stevenson and Sanford Greene is one of the best tie-ins titles to come out of the “Secret Wars” event. Stevenson’s dialogue and characterization is its primary strength. “Runaways” #2 begins with a low-key two-page opening scene that establishes that Team Puce made it to the opening ceremonies. As all exam-takers each recite a creepy vow of loyalty to Lord Doom, Greene re-introduces each character by panning over the crowd. Stevenson’s dialogue for Jubilee restores the character’s classic joie de vivre. Mall Rat-era Jubilee is back — overconfident, mischievous and irrepressible – and, without parental figures like Wolverine or Professor X, she’s got an even brattier edge. I haven’t liked reading the character so much in ages. Stevenson really knows how to write dialogue for teenagers. Pixie, the responsible worrywart, is constantly upstaged by Jubilee. A little too mechanically, Stevenson installed her to be Jubilee’s friend and foil. Jubilee and Sanna’s antag

Runaways #1
Noelle Stevenson and Sanford Greene’s swing at “Runaways” is definitely different from its predecessors, but the new team and setting offer a lot to like. Jubilee, Pixie, Amadeus Cho, Delphyne Gorgon, Skaar, Tandy (Cloak), Tyrone (Dagger) and Sanna Strand are students at the Victor Von Doom Institute for Gifted Youths, where they compete to become one of the Doom Elite. Stevenson fills the issue with typical high school angst and politics, but her lively dialogue and Greene and Rauch’s animated art give these cliches some kick and humor. It’s not the most imaginative “Battleworld” title, but it’s clever, fun and sets up for a great second issue. The premise is probably what works most against the book, as “Runaways” #1 doesn’t do too much to play with or subvert its super-powered high school setting. From Jubilee and Pixie’s “Night Witches” girl gang to Sanna Strand’s seriousness and obedience to authority, everyone’s bucketed into easy tropes. When the characters have enough page sp
